Grove Primary School

Art and Design

Our Intent & Policy

At Grove Primary School, art and design is a platform for our pupils to express and apply imaginative skills to demonstrate their creativity. Our intent is to create opportunities for pupils to build on prior knowledge, learn and understand more, experiment, record experiences, invent, create their own works of art, share and evaluate the work of others.

Pupils will become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, as well as other selected craft skills, e.g. collage, printing, weaving and patterns. They will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and craft makers, allowing them to question, explore and give meaning to professional works of art.

Created either independently or collaboratively, artwork around our school expresses the relationships with our pupils, other schools and the local community. Pupils are given the opportunity to explore and research artworks from different cultures.

We thrive in wanting our pupils to think critically and develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through a series of lessons offering knowledge and skills progression. Through a subject specific curriculum approach, our pupils get to know how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation, therefore inspiring them to become ‘independent and successful life long learners.’
