Computing

Intent

Computing is the opportunity to teach pupils how to use information relating to the use of computer hardware, provide knowledge of how digital systems work before allowing them to apply their skills through programming.

The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.

As a school, Grove Primary is committed to staying up to date with changes in the computing world as it is ever evolving and changing. We have a dedication to partnering with parents and the local community in order to provide the children with the skills they need to become more creative, skillful and knowledgeable pupils. Our computing curriculum allows pupils to learn skills in meaningful contexts as we link the themes into our cross-curricular approach which is paramount to effective learning. Therefore, the application of computing skills through a number of topics is practiced within all year groups.  We prepare children to use a range of technologies respectfully and safely when in and outside of school developing their ability to communicate with others and to prepare them for their future as global citizens.

Computing is key in building independence, confidence and self-esteem as it works well to showcase the skills of all pupils, no matter their academic prowess in other subjects. Pupils will frequently achieve success as they learn new topics, such is the nature of the curriculum.  With challenge integrated within much of the computing curriculum, pupils will inevitably develop resilience as they learn new topics and explore various pieces of software and hardware. Being safe online, understanding what to do when faced with potential dangers are of high importance. This is regularly reinforced through standalone lessons but also in context within each of the computing topics. Children are taught to understand how to respect the rights of others with regards to sharing images and gaining permission or copyright issues. This builds upon pupils’ responsibility when using a range of devices.
