Maths

The study of mathematics provides a foundation for making sense of the world and is vital to everyday life, particularly in relation to essential life skills and in the world of work.  It is used to understand and communicate ideas and information through reasoning, logical thinking and problem-solving.

Intent

At Grove, the mathematics curriculum will ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge confidently and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
  • Recognise how mathematics permeates the world around them and appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics.
